Commercial fisheries seriously threaten seabirds

Peter Exley

Global commercial fisheries have expanded dramatically since the 1960s, both in intensity and spread across the high seas. This is having direct and indirect impacts on seabirds worldwide. Commercial longline, trawl and gillnet fisheries are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of seabirds each year. This threatens the survival of a number of species, especially albatrosses. Seabirds are also suffering as fishing pressure degrades the marine environment.
